| Yosemite Lodge | Wawona Hotel | Curry Village | Other Lodging | Lodging Links | Yosemite Lodge:My favorite place to stay. It is located near Yosemite Falls, and you can hear the falls roaring all night. What a glorious sound! It has "hotel" style rooms, (with phones, at least last time I stayed in one of those rooms a few years ago) and it has different types of cabins. There are cabins with bath, and without. (You have to trek to the showers/bathrooms nearby.) I think any of these cabins will do, but get the cabins with bath, if you can! A ballpark figure to anticipate paying for a night's stay is about $80-$100. (This all depends on what time of year you stay, and what kind of room you get.) There are gift shops, restaurants, eating places, etc. all a short walk or tram-ride away from Yosemite Lodge. Since the Big Flood of '97, a lot of Yosemite Lodge's rooms were swept away, and there are no plans to re-build them. So, accommodations at the Lodge are a little less plentiful than in years past. One thing I do suggest when you stay at Yosemite Lodge—if you want to park your car anywhere near your cabin for the night, you had best find a space at the Lodge parking lot by mid-afternoon. You can still spend the rest of afternoon taking the tram to various spots around the Valley, walk to the base of Yosemite Falls, rent a bicycle, or go to the nearby Cook's Meadow (where there is an excellent view of Half Dome.)
Wawona Hotel:I have only stayed here twice. I loved it each time. Such atmosphere, and lots to do. There is a guy (Tom Bopp) who performs old Yosemite songs, (and just fun songs) in the Hotel lobby most nights. The first time I stayed at Wawona, I got a room that was a bit stuffy and cramped, but I think this type of room was in the minority. A lot of Wawona's rooms do not have a bath, but a some do. The second time I stayed at Wawona I got a room with a bath - very nice! So be sure to ask what kind of room you are getting, and try to get one that has a window with a view (instead of a window that just looks across to the room across the hall, like I did!) Prices are (ballpark figure) around $80-$120, or more, (depending if you get a room with bath) and depending on time of year. One thing to be mindful of: if you are planning on traveling up to Yosemite Village each morning: it is a long, twisty almost-hour-long ride up Hwy 41 to the Valley. Some people get a little carsick. So, keep this in mind if you stay at the Wawona. However, Glacier Point is about halfway up the road (approx. the same distance as it would be if you drove down from the Valley.) And, you can get a tram to take you from the Wawona parking lot to the nearby Mariposa Redwood Grove. And there are plenty of other things to do near the Wawona Hotel, most notably, there is a nearby golf course.
Curry Village:Camp Curry is a lovely place to stay. It has cabins with bath, cabins without bath (you must walk to nearby public showers/bathrooms) and even tent cabins. Curry Village is not open all year around, because it gets too cold for the cabins (especially the tent cabins) in the Winter. Curry Village is on Yosemite Valley's tram route, and it has eating places, cafeteria, general store, and other shops. Curry Village also seems harder hit by the bear threat---you must be very careful to not leave even a scrap of food in your car, or the bears that roam nearby may open your car like a tin can! Lodging prices at Curry Village are a little cheaper, ($50-$100, ballpark figure) but your comfort level is less. If comfort is important to you, (especially if you are traveling alone) think twice about a tent cabin. They are not suited for everybody. (Though I remember staying in them a lot with my family as a child, and had great fun!)
Other Lodging in Yosemite Park:Well, I have never stayed at the Housekeeping Camp, or the Ahwahnee, or any of the various other lodgings or campgrounds in Yosemite, so I cannot comment on them. From what I understand, the Ahwahnee is unsurpassed, a "Five Star" sort of Hotel (and with a pricetag to match!) And, I have never heard anything bad about Housekeeping Camp. Check out the excellent links below to get more info on these places, and others in Yosemite.
