My Ethics for the El Capitan Award:

A short breakdown of my award ethics:

If and when I change my award criteria, I will judge sites that applied for my award before the change by my old criteria. (In other words, I won't change the rules half way through. Whatever rules and criteria you read when you applied will be the ones I use to judge your site.)

When I am unable to view and judge any sites for any length of time, I will announce it on my awards page. I usually take several vacations during the year. (I have to take my annual pilgrimage to Yosemite, don't you know!) When I feel that I cannot judge sites within the time frame I specify on my application page, I will suspend the awards program temporarily.

Anyone who is eligible for my awards will have their sites evaluated. I will do my best to judge each site fairly, and adhere to my own criteria with an even hand. If for some reason I feel that I cannot evaluate a site because of some "conflict of interest", I will inform the applicant by email.

I will not "trade" any award in exchange for favors. In other words, I will not do the "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" thing. I want these awards to mean something.

I will not discriminate against any award applicant because of race, gender, sexual preference, age, musical tastes, or anything else.

I will always be gentle and considerate when I am giving an assessment of a web site. Hey - look at this site - look at my tutorials! I want to be encouraging, and helpful. I have no desire to break anyone's tender spirit by coming down on them too hard.

However, this is an awards program. Some people will win, some won't. It is part of the whole awards concept that I have to make judgments on quality. Please don't submit your site for awards if you cannot bear to risk any sort of rejection.

I will never attempt to humiliate any award applicants by publishing the names or URLs of sites that don't win any awards. Your site, and your email address are private. (See my Privacy Policy.) I will only list your URL on my Winner's Page if you win an award. If you apply for this award and don't win (at this time) no one else will know but you and me.
